UniJos is to hold its 33rd/34th convocations this Saturday, with 112 bags for first-class students. During a pre-convocation press briefing held at the Senate Chamber of the University, Professor Tanko Ishaya, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos (UniJoS), announced that the institution will be hosting a joint convocation ceremony for its 33rd and 34th cohorts.

The event will see a total of 20,532 students graduate, hailing from various departments within the institution and affiliated institutions.

The graduating class is made up of 112 First Class Honours students, 3,093 Second Class Honours (Upper Division) students, 6,325 Second Class Honours (Lower Division) students, 1,361 Third Class degree students, 281 Pass Division students, and 109 Pass Qualified for Pharmacy and Veterinary Medicine Programmes. Of the total number of graduates, 159 received PhDs, 3,669 earned Masters degrees, 281 obtained Postgraduate Diplomas, 11,281 received Bachelors degrees, and 5,142 individuals graduated from affiliated institutions.

During his tenure as Vice-Chancellor, he oversaw the National Universities Commission (NUC) accreditation exercises that evaluated the quality of various academic programs at the University of Jos. The Technical Report from the NUC revealed that 69 of the programs assessed received Full Accreditation status, indicating that more than 90 percent of the University’s programs have now attained full accreditation by the NUC.

He also highlighted that the Nigerian University System’s Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standard (CCMAS) was recently introduced by the NUC, requiring all universities to update their curricula to comply with the standard. Additionally, the University of Jos has been making efforts to enhance its physical infrastructure and facilities to establish a conducive environment for high-quality teaching and research.

He further disclosed that the University is investing hundreds of millions of naira to construct new buildings, laboratories, classrooms, and equipment. Furthermore, the Federal Government, through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETfund) and other funding instruments, is providing interventionist measures to address the University’s infrastructural challenges.

Multiple construction and rehabilitation projects, including auditoria, classroom blocks, and deaneries for the faculties of Veterinary Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Agriculture have either been completed or are currently underway at the university. In addition, external works and the provision of furniture and equipment have been carried out in certain faculties.

The Vice-Chancellor has announced that the upcoming events will feature the appointment of Mal. Ahmed Bamalli, Emir of Zazzau, is the new Chancellor of the university. Furthermore, the Emir will be conferred with a Doctor of Laws Degree (LL.D) Honoris Causa, along with two other distinguished Nigerians: Professor Suleiman Bogoro (D.Engr.) Honoris Causa and Elder Statesman Amb. Yahaya Kwande (D.Litt.) Honoris Causa.
