Stars shine So brightly in New York City as Met Gala honors Lagerfeld. At the annual Met Gala in New York on Monday, a host of top celebrities from the worlds of fashion, film, politics, and sports gathered to pay tribute to the late king of haute couture, Karl Lagerfeld. They displayed their finest fashion choices, exuding glamour, and even used the occasion to make some significant baby announcements.
Although Rihanna, the pop icon, arrived late, she still managed to steal the show on the red carpet. Meanwhile, tennis legend Serena Williams and supermodel Karlie Kloss stylishly showcased their baby bumps, and two celebrities even dressed up as Lagerfeld’s beloved cat.
The event’s guest list is curated with precision by Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of Vogue. She took over the charity gala in the 1990s and transformed it into one of the most talked-about events in the world. This year’s attendees included Oscar winners Nicole Kidman and Michelle Yeoh, singers Cardi B and Bad Bunny, WNBA superstar Brittney Griner, and supermodels Gisele Bundchen and Kate Moss, among others.
The Met Gala, an annual event that usually takes place on the first Monday of May but was postponed due to the pandemic, is honoring the late designer Karl Lagerfeld this year. The Costume Institute is presenting an exhibition called “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” which showcases Lagerfeld’s significant contributions to the fashion industry through his work at Chanel, Fendi, Chloe, and his own brand. The exhibition explores how Lagerfeld influenced the future of fashion while celebrating his illustrious career.
Celebrities attending the event followed the dress code, with many wearing vintage Lagerfeld outfits or outfits inspired by his signature style. Rihanna, who is expecting her second child, donned a white Valentino ensemble adorned with delicate camellias, a hallmark of Chanel, on the hood of her cape. She paired her outerwear with a sleek, form-fitting white gown with spaghetti straps and white fingerless gloves, reminiscent of Lagerfeld’s favored style.
Despite arriving later than most other guests, Rihanna told reporters on the red carpet that she was “feeling good.” Her partner, rapper ASAP Rocky, expressed his joy about becoming a father again, saying, “It feels amazing. I’m happy to be a dad.” Serena Williams, who coincided the announcement of her second pregnancy with the event, posted on Instagram, “Was so excited when Anna Wintour invited the 3 of us to the Met Gala,” referring to herself, her husband Alexis Ohanian, and their soon-to-be-born child.

In a stunning Chanel gown with elegant feather details cascading down to the floor, Kidman made an appearance. Interestingly, the dress had previously been featured in an advertisement for the iconic No. 5 fragrance nearly two decades ago.
Dua Lipa sported a cream-colored Chanel wedding dress from the 1990s adorned with black stitches, paired with a magnificent Tiffany diamond necklace sourced from the jeweler’s vault.
Olivia Wilde opted for a Chloe “violin” dress from the 1980s created by Lagerfeld, which was sourced from a different archive.
Although black, white, and cream hues were popular among the attendees, a few bright colors, such as Lil Nas X’s silver body paint, caught the eye.
Additionally, two guests arrived dressed as Lagerfeld’s beloved cat Choupette: Doja Cat with full makeup and Jared Leto in a complete furry costume.
– ‘Immense talent’ –
Although Lagerfeld faced issues for his controversial statements, including his talks about curvy women and denouncement of the #MeToo movement, the focus of the show honoring him is on his designs. None of his offensive comments were included in the exhibition. In an interview prior to the event, former model and France’s former first lady Carla Bruni spoke highly of Lagerfeld’s talent and charm.
This year’s gala, organized by Anna Wintour, had co-chairs including Penelope Cruz, Michaela Coel, Roger Federer, and Dua Lipa. The guest list was kept confidential until the event, which had an attendance of around 400 individuals. The exclusive ball required invitations, with individual tickets priced at $50,000 and table costs starting at $300,000.
