Organized Labour Demands Reconsideration of Retirement Age For All Public Servants. At this year’s Workers’ Day Celebration themed ‘Workers’ Rights and Socioeconomic Justice’ held at the Eagle Square in Abuja to mark the 2023 May Day Celebration, Organised Labour demanded a revision of the retirement age for all public servants, increasing it from 60 to 65 years, and from 35 to 40 years of service.

Additionally, Comrade Joe Ajaero, the President of the NLC, called for the formation of an independent panel to investigate the conduct of Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and his team during the 2023 general elections. The body also called for an inquiry into the Ministry of Aviation’s transfer of N12bn to purchase ten fire trucks.

According to Ajaero, the presence of equity, fairness, and justice is crucial for the survival of societies and can create resilience for nations in times of upheaval and turbulence. He emphasized the importance of these values for Nigeria’s development and stated that the country needs to prioritize them. Ajaero also highlighted how poor wages, workplace rights violations, and unpaid salaries can deprive workers of their rights.

During the event, the President of the Trade Union Congress, Comrade Festus Osifo, expressed his disappointment with the state of the economy, which he believes is struggling to survive without direction. He criticized those responsible for managing the economy, accusing them of polluting and poisoning it.

Osifo also lamented the unfortunate reality of the country being led by individuals who take pleasure in obstructing the nation’s progress. He specifically cited the Central Bank of Nigeria’s currency redesign policy as an example.

The event was attended by several notable figures, including Boss Mustapha, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation; Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment; Mohammed Bello, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory; and Pauline Tallen, the Minister of Women Affairs. Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 election, was also present.
