Cristiano Ronaldo was named the highest athlete with the most paid in 2023. Cristiano Ronaldo, the famous football player, has been named the highest-earning athlete worldwide in Forbes’ annual rich list. He earned an incredible £109 million in the past year, thanks in part to his recent £175 million yearly deal with Al-Nassr, a Saudi Arabian team, which he signed in January at the age of 38.

He has ascended to the pinnacle of Forbes’ list of the wealthiest athletes with a shrewd move that has paid off handsomely. This marks the third time he has occupied this coveted position, the last time being in 2017. He has amassed a staggering total income of $136 million (£109 million), making him the highest-paid footballer in history.

Forbes’ analysis shows that around $46 million (£37 million) of his earnings have been derived from his on-field activities, including his current contracts and a brief period of unemployment. In contrast, nearly twice that amount has been generated by his highly lucrative off-field endorsements.

Only three athletes in Forbes’ history – Roger Federer, Tiger Woods, and Conor McGregor – have exceeded his off-field earnings of $90 million (£72 million) in a single year. Ronaldo leads the way, with his long-time rival Lionel Messi dropping to second place after leading the list last year.

The Paris Saint-Germain superstar has earned a total of $130 million (£104 million), with his on and off-field earnings evenly divided, matching his 2022 earnings. Kylian Mbappe, another football star and Messi’s teammate at PSG occupies the third spot, earning $120 million (£96 million) in the past 12 months, with $100 million (£80 million) of that coming from his on-field performance.

Mbappe earns the highest salary in world football at Parc des Princes, an astounding £63 million per year. He is the only athlete under 30 to make the list, and he is the youngest member of the top 10. LeBron James, a basketball icon who earns $119.5 million (£95 million), and boxing legend Canelo Alvarez, who earns $110 million (£88 million), round out the top earners.

Dustin Johnson, a renowned golfer, occupies the sixth spot on the list of highest-paid athletes, having amassed a total of $107 million (£86 million), out of which $102 million (£90 million) is attributed to his performance in competitions. Meanwhile, Phil Mickelson follows closely in seventh place, having earned $106 million (£85 million).

Among the top earners in the world of sports, Stephen Curry, the point guard for the Golden State Warriors, stands at the eighth position with an impressive income of $100.4 million (£81 million). Roger Federer, the only tennis player to make the list, secures the ninth spot with a total earnings of $95.1 million (£76 million), of which a mere $100,000 (£80,000) comes from his on-court triumphs.

Despite having retired from professional tennis in September, Federer continues to generate substantial revenue through lucrative partnerships, including a recent deal with Oliver Peoples, a leading eyewear maker, to license his RF brand. Kevin Durant, a basketball player for the Phoenix Suns, closes the list at the third position with earnings of $89.1 million (£72 million). Forbes clarifies that the athletes’ on-field earnings encompass prizes, salaries, and bonuses accumulated between May.
